ECU File Portal Server Requirements — What You Actually Need

A self-hosted ECU file service portal needs a Linux VPS with PHP 8.2+, MySQL 8 or MariaDB 10.6+, 2 GB RAM minimum, and about 20 GB SSD storage. That costs between €4 and €10 per month from major providers. Anyone telling you that a “complex tuning portal requires a specific server setup” is selling you something. Here’s exactly what TunerSuite Ultra needs to run — and what it costs in real money.

Minimum specifications

These are the floor requirements. Any VPS meeting or exceeding these will run a self-hosted TunerSuite portal for 50-200 concurrent customers without performance issues:

  • CPU: 1 vCPU (2 recommended)
  • RAM: 2 GB minimum, 4 GB recommended for busier shops
  • Storage: 20 GB SSD minimum (50 GB if you archive original ECU dumps long-term)
  • OS: Ubuntu 22.04+ / Debian 12+ / CentOS / Rocky / AlmaLinux 9+
  • PHP: 8.2 or newer (8.3 recommended for 20-40% speed boost on the same hardware)
  • Database: MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.6+
  • Web server: Nginx or Apache (both work perfectly)
  • SSL: Free Let’s Encrypt certificate (required for payment processing)

No exotic dependencies, no proprietary binaries, no licensed databases. Everything is standard open-source Linux software that any VPS provider in 2026 supports out of the box.

Real VPS providers and current pricing

Prices as of April 2026. All of these comfortably meet the minimum requirements:

  • Hetzner CX22: 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD — €5.80/month. Best overall value for European customers.
  • Hetzner CX32: 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 80 GB SSD — €9.90/month. Overkill but future-proof for scaling shops.
  • DigitalOcean Basic Droplet: 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD — $12/month. Great US/global presence, easy UI.
  • Contabo VPS S: 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe — €4.50/month. Cheapest option by a wide margin.
  • OVH VPS Starter: 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD — €3.50/month. Good French/European presence.
  • Linode Nanode 2GB: 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD — $12/month. Solid reputation, multiple regions.

My personal recommendation for a starting shop: Hetzner CX22 at €5.80/month. Great hardware, fast SSD, strong uptime, and €5.80 is basically nothing in the context of a business that charges customers €50-200 per tuning file.

Storage planning

The database portion of TunerSuite is tiny — we’re talking dozens of megabytes for customer records, orders, and invoices. The storage cost is almost entirely driven by the ECU files you upload.

Rough sizing for file storage:

  • A typical ECU dump is 512 KB to 2 MB (larger for MG1/MD1/ME9 domains)
  • Each order stores original + modified + optional revisions — call it 4-6 MB per order on average
  • 100 orders per month = ~500 MB/month of growth
  • A shop doing 1,200 orders per year needs about 6 GB of storage annually

20 GB of SSD holds 3+ years of typical shop volume. Upgrade to 50 GB or add a separate volume when you approach the limit — both DigitalOcean and Hetzner let you resize without downtime.

What you don’t need

Marketing copy from cloud-only portal vendors sometimes implies their platforms require exotic infrastructure. They don’t. Here’s what TunerSuite specifically does not need:

  • A dedicated server. A VPS is fine.
  • Kubernetes or Docker orchestration. Plain PHP-FPM + Nginx works great.
  • A CDN. Nice to have eventually, not required to start.
  • Redis, Memcached, or Elasticsearch. Default MariaDB is enough for hundreds of concurrent users.
  • A load balancer. Single-server deployment handles realistic tuning shop volume.
  • Enterprise licensing for anything. The entire stack is free and open-source.
  • Windows Server. Any Linux distro works better and costs nothing.

When to scale up

Signs your starter VPS is too small:

  • Page loads feel sluggish at peak hours. Usually a RAM issue — upgrade to 4 GB.
  • Database queries timeout occasionally. Add an index via TunerSuite’s diagnostics, or move to a larger VPS with more CPU.
  • Storage is 80%+ full. Resize the volume (no downtime on most providers) or implement archival for old ECU dumps.
  • File upload takes minutes for routine dumps. Check your network tier — some cheap VPS providers cap bandwidth.

Most tuning shops running TunerSuite never need to upgrade past the starter tier. The bottleneck in this business is usually the human tuners, not the server.

Not interested in server administration?

That’s fine. TunerSuite Managed Hosting includes the entire infrastructure management as part of your subscription:

  • Starter at £50/mo: shared server, 10 GB storage, email support
  • Professional at £80/mo: dedicated resources, 50 GB storage, priority support, AI ECU features included
  • Enterprise at £120/mo: dedicated VPS, 100 GB storage, phone support, 24/7 monitoring, sub-30-minute issue resolution SLA

We handle updates, backups, SSL, security, monitoring, and emergency fixes. Same software as the self-hosted version, different operational model. You can switch from self-hosted to managed (or back) without losing data.

€5 VPS + £699 One-Time License

That’s the whole cost. £699 setup plus £49.99/month, with no per-user fees and no storage limits.
