What is TPROT and why do I need it?

TPROT (Tuning Protection) is a flag within Bosch ECU firmware that prevents tuning tools from reading or writing the ECU via OBD. When TPROT is enabled, tools like Kess, KTAG, Autotuner and others cannot access the calibration data. This means nobody can steal your custom remap, and customers cannot have another tuner overwrite your work. It is essential for any professional workshop that invests time developing custom calibrations and wants to retain customers.

What is the difference between TPROT and OBD Lock?

TPROT is a Bosch-specific tuning protection mechanism that blocks tuning tool access to the ECU calibration area. OBD Read/Write Lock (E-OBD Lock) is a separate flag that blocks all OBD read and write operations at a lower level. TPROT is primarily used on VAG group and Opel/FCA vehicles with EDC17 and MED17 ECUs, while OBD Lock has broader coverage including BMW EDC17 units and older VAG EDC16 controllers. TProt software handles both systems and can apply them simultaneously for maximum protection.

Can TProt unlock ECUs that were locked by someone else?

Yes. TProt works bidirectionally — it can add protection to lock an ECU, and it can remove protection to unlock an ECU. If you receive a vehicle with an ECU that has been TPROT-locked or OBD-locked by another tuner, TProt can remove those flags from the binary file. You then flash the unlocked file back to the ECU to regain full OBD read/write access. This is particularly useful when customers switch workshops or when you need to service a vehicle that was previously tuned elsewhere.

Is TProt a one-time purchase or subscription?

TProt is a one-time lifetime purchase. There are no subscriptions, no annual renewals, and no per-file fees. You buy it once and use it forever. All future software updates, ECU support additions, and bug fixes are included at no additional cost. The license is tied to your hardware and activated instantly upon purchase.

Which ECU reading tools work with TProt?

TProt works with ECU binary files from any reading tool. This includes Kess V2/V3, KTAG, Autotuner, Flex, BFlash, PCMFlash, CMD Flash, BitEdit/BitBox, and any other tool that produces a standard ECU binary dump. You read the ECU with your preferred tool, process the file through TProt to add or remove protection, then flash the modified file back. TProt operates purely on the binary file — it does not communicate with the ECU directly.
